The Colleges Scholarship proposed project will apply psychological theory and research to explore the area and severity of threats and violence used against and by the British-born men and women of South Asia who are in England, in the name of 'honor'. Both qualitative and quantitative techniques of data collection will be used.
The aim is to:

collects self-reported quantitative data on the frequency and severity of the threat of HRV and / or violence;
qualitative data gathered from victims and perpetrators of HRV through semi-structured interviews and focus groups.
using validated psychometric tests to reveal the risk and protective factors associated with health outcomes of education, mental and physical in response to HRV, and
conduct statistical analysis to reveal previously reported psychosocial correlates and / or predictors of HRV, as well as the dimensions that underlie specific forms of violence.

The Colleges Scholarships are awarded for a period of three years and the difference between full-time teaching abroad and in full-time UK / EU fees per year. The scholarships are not for a doctorate part-time. On the basis of the costs for the current academic year (£ 11,500 in 2011), then the value of the grant £ 7.950 for this year.

The School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment at Nottingham Trent University has an ambitious development strategy which allows us to offer an exciting opportunity for a PhD Studentship. The studentships will pay UK/EU fees and provide a maintenance stipend linked to the RCUK rate (£13,590 per annum for 2011/12) for up to three years. This project is part of a portfolio of research being undertaken within the newly formed Centre for Lean Projects at NTU. The successful candidate will join an international team of doctoral researchers and will have access to the collaborating construction industry partners in the UK.
Waste, as understood in Lean thinking, doesn’t feature in modern construction economics or management theory. These fail to recognise the imperfect systems in which entities not only operate inefficiently but additionally protect themselves by adding contingency and behaving opportunistically. Starting September 2011 (or earlier if the candidate is available) LIAS has available four full-time (38 hrs), four-year Ph.D. positions in the University’s profile area “Asian Traditions and Modernities” (AMT) that is coordinated by Professors Frank Pieke, Jan-Michiel Otto, Patricia Spyer, and Nira Wickramasinghe.

Description of profile area

AMT is one of the 11five-year profile areas of Leiden University that transcend the boundaries between specialist fields. AMT is coordinated by the Faculty of Humanities and the Leiden Institute for Area Studies, but is fully interdisciplinary in focus. AMT’s aim is to raise the visibility and strength of Asian studies in the University, where “Asia” includes all of East, Central, South and Southeast Asia. AMT builds on the long history of Leiden University in research and teaching on Asian traditions especially in the fields of religious studies, anthropology, philology, law and literature to explore the debates, disagreements, disjunctures and conflicts that prevail in Asia in the modern age. The global prominence of East Asia and the rapidly developing economies of South and Southeast Asia render Asia a key case for the study of the fashioning of modernities in everyday life, state practices and the global arena. AMT focuses on five themes:

Asia in the international system looks at global Asia, where the emergence of India and China as regional hegemons is reconfiguring issues of security and conflict
Power and limits of the Asian state focuses on the transformation of and challenges posed to the state in Asia
Asian debates on history and modernity explores Asia’s role in shaping the meaning of rationalism, nationalism, secularism, equality, justice and rights
New and old diversities in Asia looks at how Asia’s new modernities are being forged from the meeting of peoples, cultures, life-styles and ideologies
Production and flow of modern Asian cultures encompasses the movement of practices, styles, objects, fashions, media and the like that have come to exemplify the modern in particular places

Doctoral (Ph.D.) Fellowships

Ph.D. fellows are expected to conduct research leading to a Ph.D. thesis on a topic, country or region, and discipline relevant to AMT. The three fellowships are open in terms of research topic, disciplinary orientation and supervision by one of more members of senior academic staff at Leiden University who specialize in the study of Asia. Conditions of employment

The position of Ph.D. fellow is temporary for maximally four years of full-time appointment, and with an initial nine-month probationary period.
The salary is determined in accordance with the current scales as set out in the collective labor agreement for the Dutch universities (CAO):
Ph.D. fellow: min. € 2.042,- max. € 2.612,- gross per month, with additional holiday and end-of-year bonuses

Within the New “Molecular Materials” Group at the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering we design and synthesize new self-assembled materials. Based on a small molecule approach, the aim is to make materials for a broad range of applications ranging from single molecule electronics to sensors, energy storage, artificial photosynthesis and nano medicine.

Job description

The project focuses on the development of chemical methods that allow for selective, lithography free functionalization of nanostructures with sub nanometer resolution. Possible applications are plasmonic sensors and plasmon enhanced, photo induced catalysis.

Synthesis and functionalization of inorganic nanoparticles and nanorods
Surface functionalization

The position is for 1 year, with a possible extension to maximum 2 years, given sufficient funds are available. Some supervision of PhD students is generally included in the tasks associated with the position.

Job description
The objective of the PhD projects is to design realistic, accurate, and parsimonious channel models for advanced wireless systems equipped with MIMO, cooperation, and localization capabilities. Use cases will be centralized LTE/LTE-A-like systems and short-range decentralized UWB-like systems.

The projects will address research topics along the following scientific avenues:
-Characterization of the non-stationary behaviour of the channel response in a wide-band scenario for indoor and outdoor environments.
-Sparse representation of (multi-dimensional) MIMO time-varying channel responses.
-Multi-link channel modelling for cooperative systems.
-Hybrid channel models combining ray-tracing and stochastic methods.

The successful candidates can demonstrate solid prerequisites in wireless communication systems at Master’s level. They possess sharp analytical and modelling skills, with a strong interest and ability to work with advanced mathematical tools and concepts.

The scientific investigations conducted in the two projects will be embedded in the cooperative research project 4GMCT, supported by the Danish National Advanced Technology Foundation, and the European FP7 Specific Targeted Research Project (STREP) WHERE2 (http://ict-where2.eu/).

PhD student position, 3D imaging of nanostructured gels, Chalmers Colleges Scholarship

We are looking for a PhD candidate for a project within the SuMo Biomaterials VINN Excellence Centre with the aim of determining 3D structures in nanostructured soft materials using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) tomography. SuMo is a ten year research program that aims at developing, characterizing and exploring new structured supramolecular biomaterials with controlled mass transport properties. The program is hosted by Chalmers University of Technology and run together with SIK, the Institute for Food and Biotechnology, and the participating companies.

The project is truly interdisciplinary since it combines advanced microscopy, structure engineering, material science, and image analysis and also constitutes a part of the SOFT Microscopy Centre within the Material Science Area of Advance at Chalmers. The SOFT Microscopy Centre is a joint effort between Chalmers University of Technology, SIK – the Swedish Institute for Food and Biotechnology and SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden.
Job description

One aim of the PhD project is to utilize tomography in the transmission electron microscope (TEM) to determine 3D structures in nanostructured soft materials. Integration of tomography in the TEM nowadays enables the reconstruction of the whole 3D structure with a spatial resolution down to around 1 nm. Another aim is to strengthen and refine the preparation of aqueous network structures for high resolution microscopy, TEM tomography, and reconstruction and visualization of 3D network structures. 3D information is necessary in order to fully understand the microstructure of heterogeneous gel structures of single and mixed biopolymers. The concept of the project is pioneering and it will open up new research areas within high-resolution 3D microscopy of soft biomaterials. Detailed knowledge of the 3D microstructure at the nanometer level in soft nanostructured gels will be crucial for the design of new soft biomaterials with tailor-made diffusion and controlled release properties. The microstructural information will be used to predict diffusion mechanisms, thus enabling a relation to be established between the heterogeneous structures and the global diffusion properties (which can be obtained by nuclear magnetic resonance, NMR, for example). Furthermore, the information will serve as input for advanced mathematical modelling. There will thus be strong connections to other SuMo projects.

The research will be performed in the group of Microscopy and Microanalysis, Department of Applied Physics, Chalmers University of Technology and at the Structure- and Material Design unit at SIK. State-of-the art-instrumentation for specimen preparation and structural characterization including a FEI Titan 80-300 TEM/STEM with a monochromator, probe Cs corrector, high resolution energy filter and bi-prism for off-axis electron holography will be used. The Titan is equipped with the necessary hardware and software for 3D reconstructions of relatively thick sections of biomaterials. The project will also use the long term experience at SIK to prepare aqueous network structures for high resolution microscopy and to develop the techniques to match 3D reconstructions.

The expertise of the supervisors includes i) high resolution structural characterization, in particular direct correlation between properties and structure and ii) specimen preparation and characterization of biomaterials.
Required qualifications

A suitable background for the successful applicant is a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in physics, materials science, biotechnology or chemical engineering. As a PhD student you will perform research, study PhD courses and participate in teaching. The time period for the position is limited to five years. Final year students, young researchers and other prospective PhD candidates are herewith invited to submit project proposals in the areas of Law of the Sea and Human Rights (environmental law) and International Trade and Foreign Direct Investment (economics) as they relate to European Studies.

Research projects need to be in line with the IES research strategy that focuses on the EU as an international actor.

The successful candidates will have an MA degree with good study results. They will be fluent in English and have a thorough knowledge of European policy, law and/or economics. They will be selected on the basis of the quality of the project proposal and on the basis of their expertise and qualifications.

Application requirements

Candidates will need to fill in and send the forms that are available from this website (either in MSWord format, or in PDF format) and send a full CV, a list of publications, a detailed outline (max. 10 pages!) describing the research project, at least one letter of reference and a copy of their most recent diploma.

The IES requires that at least one (co)promoter of the project be from the VUB. The IES may assist successful candidates in finding a suitable (co-)promoter at the VUB. Co-promotership from other Belgian or foreign universities is encouraged. Successful candidates are expected to base themselves in Brussels and work at the IES. Office space and equipment will be provided along with a budget for travelling and other research-related expenses.

The deadline for applications is: 11 June 2010 (for posts to be taken up as of 1 October or as early as possible thereafter).

Amount awarded

The successful candidates will receive a research grant for one year (extendable to 4 years). Prolongation of the contract is subject to the agreement of the doctoral committee. Remuneration is at the level of a full time research assistant at a Flemish university (i.e. approx. € 1.600,00 net per month) and includes contributions for social security / insurance. Secondary employment is not allowed.

New Post-Doctoral Position SearchPolitical institutions and public expenditure:

Assessing the Brazilian subnational governmentsThe Center for Economics and Politics of the Public Sector – CEPESP at the Getulio Vargas Foundation – FGV is searching for candidates for a postdoctoral position to investigate the impact of political institutions on public expenditure at subnational level in Brazil. This search is attached to a thematic research project entitled “Political Institutions and Public Expenditure: An Assessment of the Brazilian States” funded by the Sao Paulo Research Agency – FAPESP.

This research explores the effects of political institutions (independent variables) over the allocation of public resources in Brazilian states. The independent variables are divided in two lines of investigation: the first will focus electoral aspects; the second will focus on governance aspects. The first line of investigation will explore both governors and political parties; electoral strategies; and the accountability patterns toward state citizens. The second line will explore the relationship between the governor and the state assembly; particularly, local political coalitions, and the resources the executive resorts to build up legislative majorities in local assemblies.

The successful candidate is expected to participate in all aspects of this investigation under the supervision of Professors Carlos Pereira (carlos.pereira@fgv.br) and George Avelino (george.avelino@fgv.br). Specific task will include writing reports, preparing datasets, attending workshops/conferences, and assisting with the preparation of manuscripts publications. The FAPESP post-doc fellowship runs for 12 consecutive months with a monthly payment of R$ 5,028.90 Reais (tax free), and can be renewed for up to three years. The fellowship allows the recipient to dedicate until four hours per week to other activities, with a possibility to teach at FGV, depending on course availability.
